Migration check: what it is and when it makes sense

A lot of people come to us saying one of these things: “I don't know which visa I need”, “I don't know if I can get permanent residency” or “I don't know what my next step should be”. That is what a migration check is for.

What a migration check is

It is a first conversation to look at your whole situation before you make a decision: where you are today, which visa you hold, what you studied, what you do for work, your English, your age, your family and, above all, what you want to achieve in Australia.

The goal is not to sell you an application. It is to help you understand how the system works, which paths are worth exploring and which ones probably do not fit your profile right now.

At Triaje this first session is free. You can do it from anywhere, because we work 100% online.

What a migration check is, and what it is not

In Australia, helping someone prepare a visa application, or representing them before the government or a tribunal, is what Home Affairs calls immigration assistance. According to Home Affairs, anyone giving you that assistance must be:

  • a registered migration agent,
  • a legal practitioner, or
  • an exempt person under the law.

Triaje is an education and support consultancy. When your case needs regulated migration advice, we work alongside registered lawyers and migration agents. If the check shows you are eligible for a pathway, we refer you to one of them at no cost.

You can confirm whether an agent is registered using the search on the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) website. Do it with anyone who offers to prepare your visa, whoever they are.

When it makes sense

A migration check is most useful before you commit money or dates. For example:

  • You are about to finish your studies and do not know whether a 485, another course or a different visa is next.
  • Your visa expires in a few months and you want to know your real options before the window narrows.
  • You are thinking of coming to Australia and want to understand whether studying actually moves you towards what you are after.
  • Someone told you “this course gets you residency” and you want to know if that applies to you.
  • You had a visa refused and want to understand what happened and what options are left.

What to prepare to get the most out of it

The clearer your information, the more useful the conversation. Have these at hand:

  1. Your current visa and its expiry date, if you are in Australia.
  2. Your studies: qualifications, courses completed in Australia and completion dates.
  3. Your work experience, with roles and approximate years.
  4. Your English level and, if you have one, a recent test result.
  5. Whether you travel or live with a partner or children.
  6. What you would like to achieve: stay longer, bring your family, change fields, apply for residency.

What you take away

  • A clear picture of how the Australian migration system applies to your situation.
  • Which paths are worth a deeper look and which are not.
  • If you are already eligible for a pathway, a contact with a registered professional.
  • Concrete next steps, with the dates to watch.

We also tell you where we can support you afterwards: study, translations, OSHC, Skills Assessments (such as VETASSESS or TRA) and appeals at the ART, always with the professionals each case requires.

An honest warning

No migration check can guarantee you a visa. Rules change, and Home Affairs decides each application based on your circumstances. Be wary of anyone who promises an outcome before looking at your case.

What we can give you is clarity, so you decide with real information. If you want to get started, book your session on Migration check.
